How Urwerk Selects Its Materials And Colors

The process of creation at Urwerk is special as it combines the visions of a contemporary artist – Martin Frei – with those of a watchmaker – Felix Baumgartner. This union has no equivalent. Because of it, Urwerk can well be simultaneously considered an artistic project as well as a horological one. In this context, the approach of materials and colors differs from the usual ways that brands proceed. Think, for instance, of January 2015 when the brand launched the UR-110 Eastwood with its bezel made of hard wood. In this report, Martin Frei explains the way he considers various materials, how he works with them, why black is the fundamental color to reveal the shape of a watch, and how colors are useful.
