Focus On The New Bubble By Corum
The oversized, domed sapphire crystal of the Bubble by Corum is a famous visual signature in contemporary watchmaking. Premiering in 2000, a new version of it was presented at the 2015 edition of Baselworld. The feel of this version is different from the originals, which were frankly provocative with dials decorated with all manner of creature such as cranes, monsters, and even skulls (before these were fashionable). This graphic universe came about thanks to the imaginative mind of Severin Wunderman – previous owner of the brand – whose goal was to disrupt in an artistic manner by using major philosophical topics such as the value and sense of life.
This new version retains the strong visuals of the original, but has been interpreted in a more casual and trendy way. Three new models were launched, one with an open-worked movement, and two variations (cognac and black) featuring stamped dials. The Bubble demands particular effort and skill of the brand’s designers as the domed sapphire crystal distorts the view of the dial. Thus, the designers must deal with visual distortion and still succeed in mastering it. In short, just imagine looking at your watch using a magnifying glass. Isn’t it funky?
